Work here

Small senior-led studio. No cargo-cult agile, no ego olympics, no recruiters. We hire people who care about the craft and the client — then we get out of their way.

Half Shell Studios — senior-led software team

Vacancy board · Half Shell HQ

Cowabunga… nothing open in the lair

We are not hiring right now. The team is small, the pizza budget is accounted for, and we are definitely not looking for a fifth turtle. We will be again — if this page still reads like your kind of sewer, send a CV anyway and we will keep it on file for the next recruitment run.

Headcount: lair at capacity. Openings: none for now. Pizza status: adequate.

Seen some shit — the lair is fully staffed for now

What you get

We keep the package honest. No mystery equity deck — just terms we would want if the roles were reversed.

  • Four-day working week

Four days on, three off. We are not interested in performative presenteeism.

  • Fully remote

Work from wherever you do your best work. UK-based, no mandatory days in an office we barely use.

  • Flexible hours

Come and go through the day as life happens — go to the gym at 10.30am if you like, as long as you do the work, honour the meetings you are in and reply to messages in a decent window, it's all good — we hire adults, not shift workers.

  • Choice of kit

Pick the machine you want to work on — laptop, monitor, the usual. Within reason; we are not buying a gold-plated Mac Pro because it matched your wallpaper.

  • Revenue share

A percentage share of the work you contribute to, or the clients you support — aligned when the work lands well.

  • Pension contributions

Up to 10% employer contributions when you pay in too. The boring bit of the package — future-you will be glad we did not skip it.

  • 28 days + bank holidays

Twenty-eight days holiday, plus bank holidays. If a bank holiday falls on your usual weekly day off (Monday or Friday), you are shit out of luck.

  • Your birthday off

Who wants to work on their birthday? Take the day — or the closest working day if yours lands on a weekend or bank holiday — without using your holiday allowance.

  • Funded conferences

We will fund conference visits when there is a clear point — learning, speaking, or meeting people who make you better at the job.

Pay and progression

We want the best of the best — and we pay for it. Base salary from £70k, moving up to £100k depending on experience and the scope you reliably own. Revenue share sits on top — that is the upside when the work lands well, not a substitute for fair base pay.

Promotion and pay rises track your level of ownership, not how loud you are in retros or how many meetings you booked. We are a small studio — when something matters, someone has to carry it end to end. That is what we reward.

What we mean by ownership

  • You see a problem and drive it to done — or you say early that it needs someone else, with a clear handover. Waiting to be told is the opposite of this.
  • You understand why we are doing the work, not just the ticket. Trade-offs, client context, what good enough looks like — you hold that in your head when you ship.
  • You leave things better than you found them: code someone else can run, docs that match reality, decisions written down so we are not archaeology in six months.
  • You look after the client on your work — honest updates, no surprises, and you flag when scope or timeline is drifting before it becomes a fire.
  • You help people get unblocked without making yourself the bottleneck. Ownership includes lifting the team, not hoarding the interesting bits.
  • You can point to outcomes, not activity. We do not promote for story-point theatre, retro performance, or being the loudest voice in the room.

Who fits

Small team, senior bar. We are not looking for passengers or people who need a process manual before they can think. If the below sounds like how you already work — or want to work — you will probably feel at home.

  • Passionate, driven, and willing to learn

We mean it. You care about the craft beyond the paycheck — better patterns, cleaner handovers, understanding why something broke. You do not wait for a training budget before you get sharper at the job.

  • No cargo-cult agile

No stand-ups for the sake of stand-ups, no story-point theatre, no sprints because someone read a book once. We keep what helps — clear priorities, honest estimates, regular contact — and drop the performance.

  • No ego

Strong opinions, loosely held. We want people who push back with evidence, not people who need to win every thread or hoard credit. The work should speak louder than your Slack presence.

  • Quality and ownership

We expect you to own your work start to finish — quality, comms, handover, the lot. Not "I merged my PR, ticket closed, not my problem if nobody else can run it."

  • Direct with clients

You will be the point of contact on your clients. We would rather you talk to the people with the problem than filter everything through account managers and telephone-game briefs. You hear it straight; they hear you straight.

How to apply

No recruiters. We will ignore agency mail.

  1. Send your CV to [email protected].
  2. Include examples of work we can look at — repos, write-ups, screenshots, whatever shows how you think.
  3. We assess ability on a one-hour call. That is it.
  4. The exercise is not ridiculous: a piece of code and how you would clean it up and optimise it. Practical, not leetcode cosplay.
